How to get vulnerable with God
“Whatever you are going through, you don't have to go through it alone. Draw near to the God who hears and helps you” was the first thing I saw as I read through YouVersion's daily story. At the time I read it, it made so much sense to me and attended to one of my struggles immediately. Again, I am reminded of one of my favourite things about David.
When people ask me who my favourite Bible personality is, I'm so quick to mention David and I’ll why he is my favourite. I started liking David and becoming interested in learning about him and his life when I learned that God called him a man after his heart. I was curious. Growing up, the most outstanding story of David that I heard and believe that a good number of people heard the most was how he was chosen to become King and his episode with Bathsheba.
If you read through the books of Psalms which David wrote, you would notice a rollercoaster of emotions. Some chapters were expressions of joy and praise, some chapters were of anger and sadness, some chapters were of fear, some chapters were of confusion but one thing was constant - He talked to God about everything. Every single emotion he felt never passed God by. God already knows how he felt, as per Omniscient that our dear Daddy is, but it was such a delight to have David relay it to God all over again.
It is called VULNERABILITY - talking about everything without shame to the one you love, the one who can help you, the one that can listen to you, the one who loved you first and cares about you through it all. This is exactly why David remains my favourite Bible personality. He was vulnerable to a fault, (to me, as a human) even in his lowest of lows. He knew what he had done - adultery and murder, he definitely knew he was going to face the consequences of His actions, but he still had a friend in God whom he could talk to about how messed up he felt.
If you ask me, this is a really big deal and most people even find it hard to do in their relationship with God and people.
There's no saving face with God. Be bare with Him, that is true intimacy and worship.
Steps for being vulnerable with God:
Don’t box God
God is not just someone that sits up there and rules. He does rule, but he's not a Dictator. He wants to be seen as and related with as a friend, your go-to guy, any day any time regardless of what the issue is. Sometimes, people box God to the seemingly spiritual affairs of their life and forget that God is in you, you have the life of God, and all the affairs of your life are one. There’s nothing like emotional life, family life, love life, etc. Don't compartmentalize your life and box God to certain areas and leave him out in another area. Be open. Let Him into every area, you'll be glad you did.
Be Vulnerable
Talk about everything. Are you mad about something that happened in your life? Are you afraid of what your life would look like in a few years? Are you sad that the person you like doesn't like you back? Are you confused about crucial things in your life? Are you extremely joyous? Are you feeling funny? Dear family, talk about it, express your emotions to the Father. He wants to hear it all with the juicy details. You give this a shot soonest and see how It goes.
Ask for Help
It is God's desire to be seen as the one true helper. If you're broke and you need cash ASAP, naturally, it probably won't cross your mind to ask God for help, yeah? If you're moody and sad, you would probably resort to doing ‘fun things’ to snap out of it, which is very okay (depending on the fun things you're doing😇) and you may not think to talk to God about it.
Matthew 7:7-11 NKJV “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!”
If you want peace, love, joy, money, growth, excellence, wisdom, a friend, ask God. He got you! Be a friend of God, be vulnerable with God, be close to his heart, enjoy friendship with God. Don't box God, he doesn't want it.
